If breakfast is so important, what do busy families do when everyone is barely out of bed and already running late? It will be very tempting to grab a donut or something else out of the freezer, throw it into the microwave and then out the door. Quick and it's better than nothing. But it is pretty easy to avoid the junk food habit. A little planning can always go a long ways in eating the right foods. Not always possible but it can be done at least a couple days a week.
One idea is to pick one morning during each week that everyone can eat breakfast together. The food selection can be very simple. Be creative. Younger kids will love this one. Make peanut butter and fruit sandwiches. Have the kids help (if there is time). How about a banana dog. Take a whole grain hot dog bun with peanut butter, banana and raisins. You can really use this time to catch up with kids. You may very surprised on some of the unplanned conversations with the kids.
Just have some good, healthy choices available for the rest of week. Have some whole grain, low sugar cereal available. Use strawberries, bananas, blueberries, etc in the blender to make a quick smoothie. For a very light breakfast, have a whole grain muffin or bagel. Fresh fruit is an awesome way to start the day. But an ample supply of fresh fruit and simply cut it up into several different containers for the week. Mix the fruit up and mark each container with 2-3 different days.
Remember, you can do this. You don't need a lot of preparation time. It will take longer when you first start but it will soon be second nature. Its more habit than anything.
Kids who eat a good breakfast do better at school, feel better and more likely to participate in activities later in the morning.
You can always have a more traditional breakfast on Saturday. Traditional does not mean boring. Have the kids help make the pancakes mix (whole grain). If you are really brave, let the kids make the batter without you in the kitchen. It will help teach responsibility (they will have to clean up their own mess) and give them a sense of accomplishment when mom and dad tells them it was best breakfast all week.
